The background of this piece is where it started—a photo, a window-selfie that I took of myself looking at a piece of art in a gallery window on 10th Avenue in New York City. I refined the photo, blurred some lines, and made it like a receptive canvas for the elements that went on top of it … some really fun stuff here …
I have this sketch/painting that I call Alladin-Backgammon b/c I drew it from the section at the back of Vogue where they list ‘the get’—things to buy. It provides for great still life items, and in this round, there were two vases that I really liked and a cool backgammon board. So, I used elements from this piece, along with a scanned postcard from The Palladium (back in the day!) and several bits from other collages, drawings and paintings, as well as some elements from a photo of a graffiti wall.
What does it mean? That’s up to the viewer. I just like the way everything looks together.
