Joy, Sometimes
When I was a little girl, I woke up from a nightmare one night and called for my Mom, and I asked her—what is the meaning of Life? What do we live for? She told me that we live for the Joys. That always stayed with me. I have a tattoo that says ‘Joy’ on my left wrist to remind all the time of this raison d’être. But I feel that joy comes in sometimes, not all the time.
In this collage, there are joyful elements in a sort of dance across the picture field. The figures are sliced from a print I made from a photograph of berries on branches in December. And then as I was assembling it, I had this other piece in my pile, that seemingly didn’t go along with the other pieces, but when I put it in at the left side, as though it was entering onto the stage, it kind of jumpstarted the whole chorus line with a different vibe, a diversity of elements in an energy of agreement. And this was my joy factor.
