This collage was inspired by a bar mat from Bar Franco—a bespoke cocktail bar where I shared a holiday drink with a friend back in 2022. The bartender concocted it with liquid smoke that made the whole experience feel magical.
Four years later, while digging through my collage stash during a 3:00 a.m. bout of insomnia, I rediscovered the bar mat, and this piece began to take shape.
I wanted it to have the energy of a slot machine—for it to communicate the rush that you get from taking a chance at fulfilling your hopes and dreams.
The four original patterns were originally designed as wallpaper for my former textile line, and there’s one very special piece, that’s been with me a long time and has finally found its home … the blue figure on the orange ground in the lower left. It feels like a diving warrior to me.
I painted the column backgrounds with colors to make the patterns pop.
