The streets of New York City are lined with ever-changing layers of posters—art, ads, announcements—pasted up and torn down. The rips and remnants reveal fragments of what came before, forming unexpected shapes and textures.
There’s an Italian painting term for this: pentimento—meaning “the presence or emergence of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been altered or painted over.”
I love photographing these accidental street compositions and adding my own layer to them—by introducing color and texture digitally to reimagine what’s already there.
In this piece, bold flat colors—lipstick red, marigold, and purple—play against the smoky greys, blacks, and whites of the city, resulting in a modern visual remix with an edge.
The title of the piece comes from the partial letters and fragmented words that peek through.
